Opioids is a group of substances that can relieve pain and can have a calming effect. In certain quantities, they can also act as a stimulant. Examples of opioids are the painkillers morphine and tilidine. But the drug heroin is also an opioid. You can become addicted to these substances.
If you consumed opioids regularly for a certain period of time, the body can get used to it. If you suddenly take significantly fewer opioids or stop taking them altogether, you may experience physical and mental symptoms. They may sweat and have muscle pain or diarrhea, for example. You may also experience sleep disturbances and feel restless. You may feel sick. These are known as withdrawal symptoms.
