Am Handgelenk treffen die Unterarm-Knochen Elle und Speiche auf mehrere Knochen der Hand. Elle und Speiche sind jeweils über ein eigenes Gelenk mit der Hand verbunden. Darüber hinaus gibt es ein weiteres Gelenk zwischen den Enden von Elle und Speiche.
Die Knochen in einem Gelenk sind mit Knorpel bedeckt. Wenn das Gelenk bewegt wird, dann verhindert der Knorpel, dass die Knochen aneinanderreiben. Normalerweise ist Knorpel fest, biegsam und hat eine glatte Oberfläche.
Wenn Knochen oder Knorpel verändert sind, dann kann man Schmerzen haben. Es kann auch sein, dass man den betroffenen Bereich nicht so gut bewegen kann.
