Das Brustbein ist ein flacher Knochen vorn an der Brust. Am Brustbein sind die Rippen und die beiden Schlüsselbeine befestigt. Die Rippen-Knochen sind an der Verbindung zum Brustbein mit Knorpel bedeckt. Die Knochen in einem Gelenk sind mit Knorpel bedeckt. Wenn das Gelenk bewegt wird, dann verhindert der Knorpel, dass die Knochen aneinanderreiben. Normalerweise ist Knorpel fest, biegsam und hat eine glatte Oberfläche.
Wenn der Knorpel verändert ist, dann kann die betroffene Stelle anschwellen und schmerzen. Wenn man auf die geschwollenen Stellen drückt, dann können die Schmerzen stärker werden.
