Die Hand besteht aus vielen kleinen Knochen und Gelenken. An der Hand kann man 3 Abschnitte unterscheiden. Die Handwurzel grenzt direkt an den Unterarm. Danach folgen die Mittelhand und anschließend die einzelnen Finger.
Die Knochen in einem Gelenk sind mit Knorpel bedeckt. Wenn das Gelenk bewegt wird, dann verhindert der Knorpel, dass die Knochen aneinanderreiben. Normalerweise ist Knorpel fest, biegsam und hat eine glatte Oberfläche.
Wenn Knorpel geschädigt ist, dann kann er beispielsweise weicher sein als normalerweise. Der Knorpel in einem Gelenk kann zum Beispiel dann geschädigt werden, wenn man das Gelenk über längere Zeit zu stark belastet. Wenn Knorpel geschädigt ist, dann kann man Schmerzen in dem betroffenen Gelenk haben. Die Schmerzen können stärker werden, wenn man das Gelenk belastet.
