Körper-Zellen enthalten in der Regel einen kompletten Bauplan des Körpers. Dieser Bauplan ist die Erbinformation. Die Erbinformation liegt verschlüsselt in den Chromosomen. Beim Menschen enthalten Körper-Zellen normalerweise 23 Chromosomen-Paare, insgesamt also 46 Chromosomen.
Bei Veränderungen der Erbinformation kann beispielsweise die Anzahl oder der Aufbau der Chromosomen anders sein als normalerweise. Davon können der gesamte Körper oder nur Teile des Körpers betroffen sein.
