Das Blut besteht aus Blut-Flüssigkeit und aus verschiedenen Blutzellen. Zu den Blutzellen gehören die roten Blutkörperchen. Sie befördern Sauerstoff aus der Lunge durch den ganzen Körper. Auf den roten Blutkörperchen befinden sich bestimmte Merkmale. Anhand dieser Merkmale werden verschiedene Blutgruppen unterschieden. Man unterscheidet beispielsweise die Blutgruppen A, B, AB und 0.
Wenn die Mutter und das ungeborene Kind verschiedene Blutgruppen haben, dann kann der mütterliche Körper Abwehrstoffe bilden. Die Abwehrstoffe richten sich gegen die roten Blutkörperchen des Kindes. In bestimmten Fällen können diese Abwehrstoffe zum Kind gelangen und dessen rote Blutkörperchen schädigen. Das kann zu Problemen beim Kind führen.
