Eine überstürzte Geburt verläuft ungewöhnlich schnell und kann überraschend sein. Sie dauert nur wenige Stunden. Das Kind kann bei einer überstürzten Geburt aber auch innerhalb weniger Minuten geboren werden. Wenn die Geburt so schnell verläuft, dann kann sich das Kind möglicherweise nicht so gut an die neue Umgebung anpassen oder verletzen.
Eine überstürzte Geburt kann beispielsweise vorkommen, wenn man vorher schon ein oder mehrere Kinder geboren hat. Dann kann das Gewebe in Geburtskanal und Beckenboden weicher sein als normalerweise. Wenn das Gewebe weicher ist, dann dehnt es sich schneller auf.
