Zu den äußeren weiblichen Geschlechtsorganen gehören die Schamlippen, die Klitoris und die Haut um die Scheide herum. Der After befindet sich am Ende vom Darm und ist ringförmig. Ein Schließmuskel im letzten Abschnitt vom Darm sorgt dafür, dass wir den Stuhl nur bewusst über den After ausscheiden. Den Bereich zwischen Scheide und After nennt man Damm. Der Damm besteht aus der sichtbaren Haut und aus Muskeln, die darunter liegen. Der Damm wird während der Geburt stark gedehnt, wenn das Kind durch die Scheide gelangt. Dabei können zum Beispiel der Damm oder auch der Schließmuskel am After einreißen.
