Die Knochen des Schädels werden Schädelknochen genannt. Viele einzelne Schädelknochen bilden zusammen das Gerüst des Kopfes und des Gesichts. Die Kopfhaut bedeckt die Schädelknochen. Unter der Kopfhaut und am Schädelknochen gibt es verschiedene Blutgefäße, die das Gewebe mit Nährstoffen und Sauerstoff versorgen.
Bei der Geburt durch die Scheide wirkt ein großer Druck auf das Kind. Dieser Druck ist notwendig, damit das Kind durch das Becken und die Scheide geboren werden kann. Durch den Druck in Verbindung mit dem engen Geburtsweg können Blutgefäße beim Kind abgedrückt werden.
Wenn Blutgefäße unter der Kopfhaut abgedrückt werden, kann Flüssigkeit austreten. Die Flüssigkeit sammelt sich unter der Kopfhaut an. Die Ansammlung von Flüsigkeit kann als Schwellung am Kopf sichtbar oder tastbar sein. Blutgefäße am Kopf können abgedrückt werden, wenn die Geburt länger dauert als normalerweise.
