Die Brust besteht aus Fettgewebe, Bindegewebe und der Brustdrüse. In der Brustdrüse wird während und nach der Schwangerschaft Milch gebildet, um das Kind stillen zu können. Neugeborene haben normalerweise sehr kleine Brustdrüsen. Auch männliche Neugeborene haben Brustdrüsen. Bei Mädchen wachsen die Brustdrüsen dann während der Pubertät weiter.
Die Brustdrüse des Kindes kann sich entzünden, wenn Bakterien eindringen. Eine entzündete Brustdrüse kann schmerzhaft sein. Die Brustdrüse kann außerdem gerötet, geschwollen oder wärmer sein als normalerweise. Zusätzlich kann auch Fieber auftreten.
