Die Plazenta bildet sich während der Schwangerschaft in der Gebärmutter der Mutter. Die Plazenta besteht aus Zellen der Mutter und aus Zellen des ungeborenen Kindes. Über die Nabelschnur ist die Plazenta mit dem Kind verbunden. Die Nabelschnur verbindet während der Schwangerschaft den kindlichen und den mütterlichen Blut-Kreislauf. Über die Blutgefäße in der Nabelschnur wird das Kind mit Nährstoffen und Sauerstoff versorgt. Es kann beispielsweise zu einem Blutverlust beim Kind kommen, wenn es Probleme mit der Plazenta oder der Nabelschnur gibt.
