Die Speiseröhre verbindet den Mund mit dem Magen. Sie besteht aus einem Muskelschlauch. Die Muskeln in der Speiseröhre befördern die Nahrung in den Magen. Die Speiseröhre ist am Übergang zum Magen normalerweise durch einen Schließmuskel verschlossen. Dadurch soll verhindert werden, dass Mageninhalt und Magensäure in die Speiseröhre zurückfließen. Nur beim Schlucken öffnet die Speiseröhre kurz ihren Verschluss zum Magen.
Milch kann aus dem Magen oder aus der Speiseröhre des Neugeborenen wieder in den Mund hochgebracht werden. Die Ursache dafür können beispielsweise Veränderungen in der kindlichen Speiseröhre sein. Es kann auch sein, dass es keine offensichtliche körperliche Ursache gibt.
