Wenn sich Gewebe während der Entstehung im Mutterleib nicht richtig entwickeln, kann es zu Fehlbildungen kommen. Bei einer solchen Fehlbildung formt sich aus dem Gewebe für das Auge eine Zyste. Eine Zyste ist ein mit Flüssigkeit gefüllter Hohlraum.
Die Entwicklung des Auges kann beispielsweise durch veränderte Erbinformationen gestört sein. Bestimmte Einflüsse während der Schwangerschaft können die Entwicklung des Auges ebenfalls stören.
