Im Körper gibt es normalerweise 2 Nieren. Sie liegen seitlich am Rücken etwa unterhalb der Rippen. Die Nieren filtern das Blut und bilden den Urin. So helfen sie, den Körper zu entgiften. Außerdem regeln die Nieren unter anderem den Blutdruck und den Gehalt an Mineralstoffen im Blut.
Eine zusätzliche Niere kann die gleichen Aufgaben haben wie die beiden normalen Nieren.
