Der Muskel kann kürzer sein oder sich stärker verkürzen als normalerweise. Wenn der Muskel sich verkürzt oder kürzer ist als normalerweise, dann zieht er den Kopf zur betroffenen Seite hin. Das Gesicht dreht sich dabei leicht zur gesunden Seite. Es kann auch sein, dass man den verkürzten Muskel als Verdickung am Hals tasten kann.
