Zu einer Schwangerschaft mit Zwillingen kann es zum Beispiel kommen, wenn sich eine befruchtete Eizelle in 2 Embryos aufteilt. Normalerweise teilt sich die Eizelle in 2 vollständig getrennte Embryos. Wenn die Trennung der Embryos während der Entwicklung im Mutterleib nicht vollständig ist, bleiben sie an bestimmten Körperteilen miteinander verbunden. Es kann beispielsweise sein, dass die Zwillinge am Kopf, am Brustkorb oder am Gesäß miteinander verwachsen sind. Es kann zudem sein, dass sich die Zwillinge Organe oder Körperteile teilen.
