Körper-Zellen enthalten in der Regel einen kompletten Bauplan des Körpers. Dieser Bauplan ist die Erbinformation. Die Erbinformation liegt verschlüsselt in den Chromosomen. Beim Menschen enthalten Körper-Zellen normalerweise 23 Chromosomen-Paare, insgesamt also 46 Chromosomen. Außer den Geschlechts-Chromosomen beim Mann liegt normalerweise jedes Chromosom zweimal je Zelle vor.
Es kann aber vorkommen, dass die Chromosomen mehr als zweimal in den Zellen vorliegen. Diese Veränderung der Erbinformation hat in der Regel schwerwiegende gesundheitliche Auswirkungen.
