Das Herz pumpt das Blut durch die Schlagadern in alle Bereiche des Körpers. Der Druck in den Schlagadern muss hoch genug sein, damit alle Organe genügend Blut erhalten. Andererseits kann ein zu hoher Blutdruck schädlich für das Herz, die Nieren oder andere Organe sein. Der Blutdruck steigt bei Belastung natürlicherweise an. In der Nacht sinkt der Blutdruck normalerweise ab.
Der Messwert für den Blutdruck besteht immer aus zwei Zahlen. Die erste Zahl ist der größte Druck in den Schlagadern. Er entsteht, wenn das Herz das Blut hinauspumpt. Der zweite Wert ist der niedrigste Druck in den Schlagadern. Er besteht, wenn sich das Herz gerade wieder mit Blut füllt. Ein normaler Blutdruck kann etwa bei 120 zu 80 liegen. Je nach Alter oder Vorerkrankungen kann ein normaler Blutdruck auch etwas höher oder niedriger sein.
Wenn der Blutdruck einmalig erhöht ist, dann ist das noch keine Krankheit. Erst wenn der Blutdruck über einen längeren Zeitraum erhöht ist, ist das krankhaft.
