Außen auf dem Gehirn und dem Rückenmark liegen 3 dünne Hirnhäute. Ganz außen liegt eine harte Haut. Darunter liegen 2 weiche Häute.
Wenn die Hirnhäute gereizt sind, dann kann man verschiedene Beschwerden haben. Oft hat man starke Kopfschmerzen und der Nacken ist steif. Man kann helles Licht und laute Geräusche oft nur schwer ertragen. Manchmal ist einem auch übel und man muss sich erbrechen. Man kann auch noch weitere Beschwerden haben.
Die Hirnhäute können zum Beispiel durch eine Entzündung oder durch eine Blutung im Kopf gereizt werden.
