Der flüssige Blut-Anteil enthält Proteine. Der Gehalt an Proteinen bestimmt zum Großteil die Zähflüssigkeit des flüssigen Blut-Anteils. Wenn die Zähflüssigkeit verändert ist, kann das Blut dickflüssiger oder dünnflüssiger als gewöhnlich sein. Dadurch kann sich die Fließfähigkeit des Blutes verändern. Veränderungen der Zähflüssigkeit können bei bestimmten Erkrankungen vorkommen. Dickflüssigeres Blut kann zum Beispiel bei Erkrankungen auftreten, bei welchen der Protein-Gehalt im Blut stark erhöht ist.
