Wenn ein Kind plötzlich und unerwartet stirbt, dann wird das als plötzlicher Kindstod bezeichnet. Auch in einer genauen Untersuchung nach dem Tod wurde keine andere Todesursache gefunden.
In der Regel kommt es zum plötzlichen Kindstod, wenn das Kind schläft. Man weiß nicht genau, warum ein zuvor gesundes Kind plötzlich versterben kann. Es sind aber verschiedene Umstände bekannt, die das Risiko für einen plötzlichen Kindstod erhöhen. Das Risiko ist beispielsweise bei frühgeborenen Kindern und bei Jungen erhöht.
