Im Körper sorgen bestimmte Proteine dafür, dass Vorgänge besser oder schneller ablaufen. Man nennt diese Proteine auch Enzyme. Bestimmte Enzyme können als Medikamente verabreicht werden. Das kann zum Beispiel notwendig sein, wenn der Körper ein Enzym aufgrund einer Erkrankung nicht selbst herstellen kann. Außerdem können Nahrungs-Ergänzungsmittel Enzyme enthalten.
Ein Stoff kann zum Beispiel eine Vergiftung verursachen, wenn man zu viel davon eingenommen hat. Es kann auch sein, dass man den Stoff aus Versehen bekommen oder eingenommen hat. Bei einer Vergiftung mit Enzymen kann es beispielsweise zu Bauchschmerzen, Übelkeit und Erbrechen kommen.
