Strychnin ist ein giftiger Stoff, der in bestimmten Pflanzen-Samen oder Pflanzen-Teilen vorkommt. Strychnin kann zudem Drogen wie Kokain oder Heroin beigemengt werden. Strychnin wirkt am Rückenmark. Das Rückenmark befindet sich in der Wirbelsäule. Das Rückenmark besteht aus Nervenfasern. Über die Nervenfasern tauscht das Gehirn Informationen mit den Organen, der Haut und den Muskeln aus. Strychnin bewirkt, dass sich die Muskeln anspannen.
Bei einer Vergiftung durch Strychnin verkrampfen sich die Muskeln im Körper. Das betrifft auch die Muskeln, die man zum Atmen braucht. Daher kann es zu Atemnot oder sogar zu einem Atemstillstand kommen.
