Während des normalen monatlichen Zyklus wird die Schleimhaut in der Gebärmutter zunächst immer dicker. Dann wird sie im Rahmen der Regelblutung abgestoßen. Dafür sind verschiedene Geschlechtshormone zuständig.
Durch Medikamente kann die Regelblutung unabhängig von körpereigenen Hormonen ausgelöst werden. Das kann dazu dienen, eine ungewollte Schwangerschaft zu verhindern.
