Ein Tracheostoma ist eine zusätzliche Öffnung in der Luftröhre. Durch die Luftröhre gelangt die Luft in die Lunge. Ein Tracheostoma wird künstlich durch eine Operation angelegt.
Durch das Tracheostoma hat die Luftröhre eine Verbindung nach außen. Ein Tracheostoma kann angelegt werden, wenn man sehr schlecht Luft über die oberen Atemwege bekommt. Das kann zum Beispiel passieren, wenn die oberen Atemwege durch eine Verletzung oder eine Veränderung dauerhaft verengt sind. Ein Tracheostoma wird auch angelegt, wenn man längere Zeit künstlich beatmet wird.
Die künstliche Öffnung in der Luftröhre benötigt eine besondere Behandlung. Dazu gehört zum Beispiel, dass man die Öffnung reinigt und Material an der Öffnung austauscht.
