Durch Verletzungen oder Erkrankungen kann ein Gelenk stark geschädigt werden. Man kann starke Schmerzen haben oder die Knochen im Gelenk stehen nicht mehr richtig zueinander. Dann kann das Gelenk in einer Operation versteift werden.
Man kann die Knochen mit Schrauben oder mit Metallplatten miteinander verbinden. So wachsen die Knochen zusammen und das Gelenk wird versteift. Die Knochen in dem Gelenk können dann nicht mehr bewegt werden.
