This type of scan allows certain tissues in the brain and the cerebrospinal fluid cavities to be examined.
A gamma scan is an examination in which a radioactive substance is used to make tissues and processes in the body visible. The radioactive substance is injected into a blood vessel. It spreads through the body via the blood vessels and reaches the organs. The degree to which the radioactive substance accumulates in the organs depends on the activity of the metabolic processes in the organs. A camera records the distribution of the radioactive substance throughout the body as an image. The image shows how metabolic activity is distributed throughout various organs.
The cerebrospinal fluid is produced in the cavities in the brain. The various cavities for cerebrospinal fluid are connected to one another. So the cerebrospinal fluid is able to flow through the different cavities in the brain to the space around the brain. The cerebrospinal fluid is reabsorbed in the cavity around the brain. Normally exactly as much cerebrospinal fluid is produced as is reabsorbed.
