A gamma scan is an examination in which a radioactive substance is used to make tissues and processes in the body visible. The radioactive substance is injected into a blood vessel. It spreads through the body via the blood vessels and reaches the organs. The degree to which the radioactive substance accumulates in the organs depends on the activity of the metabolic processes in the organs. A camera records the distribution of the radioactive substance throughout the body as an image. The image shows how metabolic activity is distributed throughout various organs.
The oesophagus or gullet connects the mouth with the stomach. It is made up of a muscular tube. The muscles in the oesophagus move food into the stomach.
