A gamma scan is an examination in which a radioactive substance is used to make tissues and processes in the body visible. The radioactive substance is injected into a blood vessel. It spreads through the body via the blood vessels and reaches the organs. The degree to which the radioactive substance accumulates in the organs depends on the activity of the metabolic processes in the organs. A camera records the distribution of the radioactive substance throughout the body as an image. The image shows how metabolic activity is distributed throughout various organs.
The liver is an important organ on the top right of the abdomen. For example, it helps with blood clotting and detoxifying the body. Nutrients from food are processed in the liver.The gallbladder is in the top right part of the abdomen below the liver. The liver produces bile. The bile flows through bile ducts to the gallbladder and is stored there. When needed, the bile flows through another bile duct to the intestine. There, the bile helps to digest fats.
