A gamma scan is an examination in which a radioactive substance is used to make tissues and processes in the body visible. The radioactive substance is injected into a blood vessel. It spreads through the body via the blood vessels and reaches the organs. The degree to which the radioactive substance accumulates in the organs depends on the activity of the metabolic processes in the organs. A camera records the distribution of the radioactive substance throughout the body as an image. The image shows how metabolic activity is distributed throughout various organs.

Blood is made up of a liquid part and different blood cells, among other things.The blood cells include the red blood cells, the white blood cells and the platelets.The red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs throughout the body.Red blood cells are primarily broken down in the spleen and liver. The spleen is on the top left side of the abdomen. The liver is located in the upper right of the abdomen. This examination determined how quickly and in which organs the red blood cells are broken down.
