A gamma scan is an examination in which a radioactive substance is used to make tissues and processes in the body visible. The radioactive substance is injected into a blood vessel. It spreads through the body via the blood vessels and reaches the organs. The degree to which the radioactive substance accumulates in the organs depends on the activity of the metabolic processes in the organs. A camera records the distribution of the radioactive substance throughout the body as an image. The image shows how metabolic activity is distributed throughout various organs.
Blood is made up of a liquid part and different blood cells, among other things.The hematopoietic organs include the bone marrow, spleen and liver.The bone marrow is inside the bone. The blood cells are formed in the bone marrow, for instance. The bone marrow also contains fat.The spleen is on the top left side of the abdomen. Old blood cells are broken down in the spleen. Furthermore, defense cells are stored. If the defense cells are needed, they are then released from the spleen into the blood.The liver is located in the upper right of the abdomen. Old blood cells are broken down in the liver. In certain cases, blood cells may also be produced in the spleen and liver.
