OPS-Code 3-70b.3:

Scintigraphy: Radionuclide tests of absorption and excretion: Measurement of iron absorption

A special test was used to evaluate how much iron your small intestine is absorbing.

The intestines are made up of the small intestine and the large intestine or colon. The small intestine connects to the stomach. The nutrients are absorbed into the blood from the food in the small intestine.Iron is absorbed in the small intestine. It is an important trace element. Iron is primarily needed by the body to produce red blood cells.

Radioactive iron is used for this test. The radioactive iron is swallowed and reaches the small intestine via the stomach. In the small intestine, the radioactive iron is absorbed into the blood vessels. The blood is then tested to measure how much of the iron has been absorbed by the small intestine within a specific time period. If the small intestine is absorbing less iron than normal, the blood will also contain a smaller quantity of the radioactive iron.

Additional indicator
