Iodine is absorbed by the thyroid gland in particular.The thyroid is a small organ at the bottom of the neck. The thyroid gland needs iodine to produce important messenger substances (hormones) for the body. These messenger substances influence the heartbeat, digestion, and body temperature, among other things.
A gamma scan is an examination in which a radioactive substance is used to make tissues and processes in the body visible. Radioactive iodine was used for this examination. Radioactive iodine is normally swallowed and reaches the intestines via the stomach. In the intestines, it is absorbed into the blood and distributed around the body. If thyroid gland tissue is present in the body, it can absorb the radioactive iodine. A camera then records the distribution of the radioactive iodine throughout the body as an image. This makes it possible to determine whether and at which sites in the body thyroid gland tissue is present. The quantity of radioactive iodine absorbed by the tissue can also be calculated. The scan can also be used to investigate tissue that may develop from thyroid gland tissue. This can be done in the case of new tissue growths (neoplasms), for example.
