A gamma probe for measuring radiation was used to detect sentinel lymph nodes in your body during an operation.
The lymph nodes are small bean-shaped objects. They are found throughout the body. Lymph nodes filter the tissue fluid. They are part of the defense system.The tissue fluid from cancerous tissue normally flows first through a sentinel lymph node before reaching other lymph nodes.The tissue in the body is made up of cells. With cancer, the cells multiply uncontrollably, which leads to a malignant neoplasm (abnormal growth of tissue) developing. The cancer cells can destroy the healthy tissue and spread throughout the body.
A radioactive substance was used to locate a sentinel lymph node during an operation. For this purpose, the radioactive substance is injected into the area where the cancer tissue is located before the operation. From there, the radioactive substance flows with the tissue fluid to the sentinel lymph nodes. During the operation, a gamma probe for measuring radiation is then used to pinpoint where the radioactive substance has accumulated. This allows the sentinel lymph node to be located. Several sentinel lymph nodes may be present.
