During surgery, your dura mater and skull bone at the top of your head were closed.
On the outside of the brain and spinal cord there are three thin meninges (linings). A tough meninx, the dura mater, is on the outside. Below that are two soft meninges.
The brain is surrounded by a protective shell of bone, known as the skull or cranium.
When someone has an opening in their dura mater or skull, an operation can close it. Artificial material or the body’s own tissue can be used to close the opening.
