The ear is a sensory organ that is used to hear and to maintain one’s balance. There are 3 different areas in the ear: the outer ear, middle ear and inner ear.The middle ear begins behind the eardrum. It consists of the air-filled tympanic cavity and the 3 ossicles.The ossicles transmit sounds from the eardrum to the inner ear in the form of vibrations.
The surgery involved making a type of window in the bony wall between the middle ear and the inner ear. A small drill is normally used for this purpose. A thin layer of bone may be left in place or the window created may be covered with tissue taken from a different part of the body. The new window allows sound to travel into the inner ear.
The operation also involved attaching a small part in your middle ear. This part is intended to replace the function of the auditory ossicle. This replacement part is made of synthetic material, such as metal.
