There are 3 different areas in the ear: the outer ear, middle ear and inner ear.The outer ear begins at the auricle and then becomes the external auricular canal. The end of the external auricular canal is sealed by a thin membrane. This membrane is known as the eardrum.The middle ear begins behind the eardrum. It consists of the air-filled tympanic cavity and the 3 ossicles.
There is a small bony projection on the head behind the ear. It contains small cavities full of air. You can feel this bony projection behind the ear.The mastoid process is a bony protrusion behind your ear, and is located next to the middle ear and the external auditory canal.
The bony walls of the mastoid process can be damaged by disease. This can lead to the formation of a connection with an adjacent structure, such as the auditory canal. To close this type of connection, a surgical procedure can be performed to cover it with a thin layer of cartilage or connective tissue, for example.
