The paranasal sinuses are air-filled cavities in the skull. They are each connected to the nasal cavity via an opening that forms the inside of the nose. The paranasal sinuses are lined internally with mucous membrane. There are four different paranasal sinuses.
Fluid such as secretions or pus may accumulate in the sinuses connected to the nose (paranasal sinuses). The puncture can be used to determine whether this type of fluid accumulation has occurred. It can also be used to drain fluid out of the paranasal sinuses.
