Every tooth consists of 3 sections: the crown, the tooth neck (cervix) and the tooth root. The crown is the visible part of the tooth. The tooth neck is covered by the gums. The tooth root keeps the tooth in the jawbone.
The function of a dental implant is to replace a tooth. It consists of several components. The lower part is the artificial tooth root. The artificial tooth root is attached to the jawbone. Once the artificial tooth root becomes integrated with the bone, additional components of the implant can be fitted.
Your operation involved opening the gum above the artificial tooth root. A connecting piece was then screwed into the top of the artificial tooth root. A crown or bridge can then be attached to the connecting piece. A crown or bridge is the uppermost, visible part of an implant.
