OPS-Code 5-262.41:

Operations on salivary glands and salivary gland excretory ducts: Resection of a salivary gland: Submandibular gland: With intraoperative monitoring of the ramus marginalis of the N. facialis

Your submandibular gland was surgically removed.

The salivary glands produce saliva and transport it to the mouth. In all, there are 6 large salivary glands. The two parotid glands are located in front of the left and right ear. The two submandibular glands are located to the left and right at the back of the lower jaw. The two sublingual glands are located to the left and right beneath the tongue.

Part of the facial nerve runs through the submandibular gland. The facial nerve runs from both sides of the brain to different parts of the head. The nerve does different things. For example, it controls a lot of facial muscles. The nerve is also important for our sense of taste. It also affects our hearing and how much saliva and tears are formed. The function of part of the facial nerve was monitored during your surgery.
