You have a hole in your cardiac septum which has now been enlarged.
The heart pumps blood through the body. Inside the heart are 4 chambers. There are 2 heart atria and 2 ventricles. Both heart atria and both ventricles are separated from each other by a partition.
With some heart conditions, the blood is not properly pumped to the lungs or the body via the usual passages. A hole in the cardiac septum may then be important. Via a hole like this, the blood can flow through other passages.
When an operation is being done on the cardiac septum, a heart-lung machine may be used.During surgery the task of a heart-lung machine is to replace the functions of the heart and lungs. Amongst other things, the heart-lung machine enriches the blood with oxygen and pumps it around the body.
