OPS-Code 5-459.3:

Incision, excision, resection and anastomosis of small and large intestine: Bypass anastomosis of intestine: Large intestine to large intestine

An artificial connection between two parts of your large intestine was surgically created.

The large intestine (colon) is like an upside down U in the abdomen. The first part the large intestine is located below the stomach on the right of the abdomen. Then it continues upwards and runs across from right to left. Then it descends again. There then follows an S-shaped part located on the bottom left side of the abdomen, which then merges into the rectum. The rectum is the last section of the large intestine. The large intestine is where water and minerals are removed from the partially digested food (chyme). The stool is then excreted via the rectum.

The operation involved, firstly, using an incision to open two parts of your large intestine. These two openings were then connected. This created an artificial connection between the two parts. Food can then travel through this connection. This type of operation allows one part of the large intestine to be bypassed. Such a bypass causes less or no food to pass through part of the large intestine. This can also relieve the strain on the intestine.
