OPS-Code 5-506.0:
Operations on the liver: Implantation, replacement and removal of an indwelling catheter system in hepatic artery and portal vein (for chemotherapy) and open surgical intrahepatic chemoperfusion: Implantation
A tube for chemotherapy was inserted into a blood vessel in your liver.
The liver is an important organ on the top right of the abdomen. For example, it helps with blood clotting and detoxifying the body. Nutrients from food are processed in the liver.
Chemotherapy is usually used with cancers. The tissue in the body is made up of cells. With cancer, the cells multiply uncontrollably, which leads to a malignant neoplasm (abnormal growth of tissue) developing. The cancer cells can destroy the healthy tissue and spread throughout the body. Chemotherapy aims to prevent cancer cells from multiplying and to kill them off. However, there are also other diseases where chemotherapy can be used.
Many different drugs can be used during chemotherapy. These drugs differ in terms of their chemical composition and the way they work, for example.
A tube for chemotherapy can be inserted into a hepatic artery or the portal vein. The hepatic arteries supply oxygen-rich blood to the liver. The portal vein transports nutrient-rich blood from the gastrointestinal area to the liver.
