During surgery, a fluid-filled cavity at a joint was removed.
Fluid-filled cavities at a joint are also called ganglions or cysts. They can form, for example, on a tendon sheath or a joint capsule.
Tendons are made up of very firm connective tissue. Tendons attach muscles to bones.A tendon sheath is a covering for the tendon. It cushions the tendon and contains a small amount of fluid. This reduces friction between the tendon and its surroundings.Joints are encased in a joint capsule.The joint capsule contains synovial fluid. This enables the bones to slide easily past one another.
The procedure was carried out as an arthroscopy.An arthroscopy first involves making a small incision in the skin. A thin tube is advanced through this incision. There is a camera at the top of the tube. The camera transmits images of the inside of the joint to a screen. Instruments such as forceps and scissors can be inserted into the joint through other small incisions.
