Treatment with radiation is also called radiotherapy. The purpose of radiotherapy is to destroy diseased tissue with radiation. The surrounding healthy tissue needs to be protected as much as possible. For this reason, the sites that are to be treated with radiation are planned out very precisely before radiotherapy begins.
Before having radiotherapy, the patient is usually given detailed information about the steps involved in the treatment and possible side-effects. Images of the body are also created. These images are used by a computer program to determine which sites are to be treated with radiation.
