The tissue in the body is made up of cells. With cancer, the cells multiply uncontrollably, which leads to a malignant neoplasm (abnormal growth of tissue) developing. The cancer cells can destroy the healthy tissue and spread throughout the body.Cancer cells have accumulated in your bone. The cancer cells also affect and change the adjacent bone cells. This can result in significant, uncontrolled growth of bone tissue.
You have had a radioactive drug injected into a blood vessel. This drug accumulates in particular in areas of high bone formation. When the drug is absorbed by the bone cells, it breaks down and emits radiation. The radiation that is emitted should destroy the pathologically altered cells in your bone. The radiation only works within a small area of the body. This serves to protect the healthy surrounding tissues.
