The heart muscle is supplied with oxygen-rich blood via the coronary arteries. The coronary arteries are blood vessels that run around the outside of the heart.
For this treatment, a thin tube was firstly inserted into a blood vessel in the groin or arm. This tube was advanced along inside the blood vessel. Various instruments can be pushed onto the tip of the tube. The instruments can be used, for example, to dilate a blood vessel that has become constricted. Drugs can also be administered into the blood vessel from the tip of the tube. You were given a radioactive drug into the blood vessel. Its function is to keep the blood vessel open for longer. X-ray images are taken during the treatment. These show clearly whether the tip of the tube is in the right place.
