Antikörper sind Abwehrstoffe, die auch im Körper vorkommen. Diese Abwehrstoffe erkennen bestimmte Merkmale von Zellen oder Botenstoffen und können sich gezielt daran binden. Man kann Antikörper für die Behandlung bestimmter Erkrankungen künstlich herstellen. Sie sollen dem körpereigenen Abwehrsystem dabei helfen, eine Erkrankung zu bekämpfen. Eine solche Behandlung nennt man auch Immun-Therapie.
Künstlich hergestellte Antikörper können krankhaft veränderte Zellen gezielt erkennen und so dafür sorgen, dass das Abwehrsystem die Zellen bekämpft. Manche Antikörper können eine Erkrankung auch hemmen, indem sie bestimmte Botenstoffe abfangen.
