The placenta forms in the mother’s womb during pregnancy. The placenta consists of cells from the mother and cells from the unborn child. The placenta supplies the unborn child with nutrients and oxygen via the umbilical cord.
After the birth of a baby, the placenta has to detach itself from the uterus. The placenta is then birthed as afterbirth. The delivery of the placenta is medically supervised. This is to ensure that the placenta detaches completely from the uterus.
