ICD-Code F51.4: Sleep terrors [night terrors]
You experience fear or panic while sleeping.
Your body recovers during sleep. In addition, sleep helps to consolidate memories and process emotions. Sleep typically follows a specific sequence. There are deep sleep phases and lighter sleep phases. These phases alternate during sleep.
Experiencing intense fear or panic during sleep can cause you to wake up. You might also scream while doing so. Your body may also react with sudden thrashing, a rapid heart rate, or sweating. During this time, you are typically unresponsive. After waking up, you can usually remember little or nothing of what happened.
